What are the options when treatment is not one?
- Open market

What is the legislation for animals going to market?
- Welfare of Animals at Markets Order 1990
- Animal Welfare Act 2006
- Welfare of Farmed Animals (England) act 2007
What does the market legislation entail?
That it is an offence to send an unfit animal to market
-not defined but unfit= animal or bird that is infirm by virtue of being diseases, injured, fatigued.
What legislation is involved in transport of animals to slaughter?
- WATO 2006
- Council Regulcation (EC) 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport and related operations
What does transport legislation entail?
- Welfare of animal is paramount at all times
- No animals is to be transported unless fit for all aspects of the journey including loading/ unloading.
- All animals should be transported in conditions that prevent injury or unnecessary suffering
- Animals CANNOT be mechanically loaded, must be able to move independently
- Cannot be blind/ infirm
In which circumstances can injured or slightly ill animals be transported?
-Under vet supervision to nearest vet practice for treatment OR to nearest place of slaughter if transport will not cause unnecessary suffering
What can be done to ease discomfort of a lame animal when travelling?
- Foot blocks and analgesics
- Some analgesics have 224hr withdrawal if given IV
What options are left if transport isn’t one?
- Emergency on farm slaughter
- Fallen stock
What does emergency slaughter mean?
- allows for animals that have suffered an accident that means they are unfit to travel to a slaughterhouse to be slaughtered on the farm.
- accident= unforeseen/ unexpected event causing injury/ damage
- emergency= implies slaughter takes place as a result of an event needing immediate action
How is an AM carried out for emergency slaughter?
The vet surgeon does it and writes the outcome on the veterinary declaration
What considerations should be taken into account before deciding to do emergency slaughter?
- Was it an accident?
- Is it an emergency?
- Was animal healthy before accident?
- Does the animal meet the AM conditions?
- Any medicines withdrawal?
- CLP? (many go down on dirty floor, cannot then clean off carcass so animal isn’t eligible for consumption)
What other scenarios than an accident or health concern could be eligible for on farm slaughter?
Hyper aggressive animals that would be dangerous to itself, other animals and humans if tried to transport to abattoir.
-need to collect good history to ensure it isn’t a sudden change in behaviour If so concerns diseases e.g. mad cow
