Dead mag/Live mag checks purpose
Dead mag: makes sure both mags are working before takeoff
Live mag: makes sure both mags turn off before shutdown
Engine fire during start
- Keep cranking to suck flames
- open throttle and close mixture
- Secure airplane ( turn off master, mags, fuel selector)
- use fire extinguisher
Electrical fire in flight
1 - Master and avionics off
2 - All electrical switches off
3 - Cabin heat/air and overhead vents closed
4 - use fire extinguisher
5 - Ventilate cabin
6 - master on
7 - radio switches off
8 - Avionics on
9 - All switches on one at a time to isolate problem
Engine fire in flight
1 - Secure engine (mixture, fuel selector, master)
2 - Cabin heat and air off (except overhead vents)
3 - Set glide speed of 100 knots or whatever necessary to extinguish fire
4 - Forced landing
Cabin fire
1 - Master off
2 - Close all vents
3 - use extinguisher
4 - ventilate cabin
5 - land ASAP
Wing fire
1 - Turn off nav/strobe lights and pitot heat.
2 - Perform slip to keep fire away from fuel tanks and cabin.
3 - Land ASAP with minimal flaps
Icing
1 - Pitot heat
2 - Turn back or change altitude
3 - Activate defrosters and increase prop RPM
4 - Carb heat as required
5 - Land ASAP with minimal flap
Excessive rate of charge on ammeter
1 - Alternator off and pull alternator breaker
2 - Non essential electrical equipment off
3 - land as soon as practical
Low voltage
1 - Make sure alternator breaker is not popped
2 - Turn master off and on again (make sure avionics are off)
3 - If that doesn’t work turn alternator/electrical equipment off and land as soon as practical
