Emergency patient care Flashcards
What’s the purpose of flowmeters?
attached to therapy regulators, adjusts oxygen delivered to patients at the range of 1-25 L/min
Incorporates a floatball in a calibrated tube, Float rises or falls based on gas flow
Pressure compensated flow meter
Not affected by gravity and can be placed in any position, calibrated to record flow rate
Bourdon gauge flowmeter
Inflation of stomach with air
Gastric distention
When does gastric distention occur
1: excessive pressure to inflate the lungs
2: Ventilations are performed too fast
3:The airway is partially obstructed during ventilation attempts
How is gastric distention harmful?
1: promotes regurgitation of stomach contents (can lead to aspiration)
2:A distended stomach pushes the diaphragm upward in to the chest, which reduces space for the lungs to expand
What are the 2 types of gastric tubes that suction contents from the stomach incase of gastric distention
Orogastric tube (OG)
Nasogastric tube (NG)
OG and NG should be used with extreme caution when?
Esophageal disease eg: esophageal varices (alcoholic)
Which one is safer orogastric or nasogastric tube?
orogastric tube
