Emergency Fluids Flashcards
Truly dissolve, molecules or atoms separate and disperse completely and equally throughout the solvent. Dissolved molecules will cross the membrane through osmosis to equalize unequal concentrations
Crystalloid Solution
Expand the contents of the intravascular compartment without shifting to or from other compartments
Isotonic Solutions
Explain 3-1 Rule
3 mL of isotonic crystalloid solution is needed to replace 1 mL of patients blood
Mechanism of Action for Normal Saline (0.9% NaCl)
Replaces fluid and electrolytes with isotonic solution
Indications for Normal Saline (0.9% NaCl)
- Heat related problems
- Shock
- Hypovolemia
- Hypervolemia
- Sepsis
Contraindications for Normal Saline (0.9% NaCl)
None
Adverse Reactions of Normal Saline (0.9% NaCl)
Rare therapeutic dosages
Considerations for Normal Saline (0.9% NaCl)
Care should be used in patients with CHF, renal compromise, hypertension
Mechanism of Action for Lactated Ringers
Replaces water and electrolytes (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Cl-) with isotonic solution
Indications for Lactated Ringers
Hypovolemic shock; Acute blood loss, burns
Contraindications for Lactated Ringers
Liver Failure patients (cannot metabolize lactate)
Adverse Reactions of Lactated Ringers
Rare therapeutic dosages
