what are the 3 types of emergency contraception
- CU-IUD
- Ulipristal 30mg
- Levonorgestrel 1.5mg
when does emergency contraception need to be taken

1st line of emergency contraception
how long can it be inserted upto after UPSI and ovulation
- CU-IUD
- can be inserted up to 120HR (5DY) after 1st UPSI
- can be inserted up to 5DY after earliest estimated date of ovulation
2nd line of emergency contraception
hormonal contraception
- ulipristal = upto 120hr (5DY)
- 2nd dose = vomited or diarrhoea in 3hr
which is more effective levonorgestrel or ulipristal?
ulipristal more effective than levonorgestrel for emergency contraception
3rd line for emergency contraception
- levonorgestrel upto 72hr (3 days)
- 2nd dose = vomited or diarrhoea in 3hr
what affects the hormonal emergency contraceptives
- BMI can reduce effectiveness particularly levonorgestrel
- if BMI > 26 or weight > 70kg give ulipristal or double dose of levonorgestrel
can the hormonal emergency contraceptions be used more than once in same cycle
YES but levonorgestrel = increased s/e
when to reinitiate regular contraception after levonorgestrel
- start regular hormonal contraception immediately
- use condoms until effective
when to reinitiate regular contraception after ulipristal
- if during WK1 OF REGULAR CHC = reinitated immediately and use condoms 7 days
- otherwise wait 5 days to start regular hormonal contraception + use condoms during 5 days and till tx = effective
levonorgestrel 1.5mg s/e + CI
breast feeding, cautions, s/e, when to avoid and interaction
- breast feeding no delay
- caution in pt with malabsorption
- can cause breast tenderness, DVT, fatigue + haemorrhage
- avoid in severe liver impairment
- CYP inducer interaction
Ulipristal 30mg s/e + CI
breast feeding, cautions, s/e, when to avoid and interaction
- breastfeeding = 1 week delay
- caution in severe asthmatic controlled - glucocorticoids
- can cause cycle irregularities, D+V, altered mood, dizziness
- CYP inducer interaction
