Emergence of a Global Culture Flashcards
What is Cultural Diffusion?
Where cultural elements e.g. ideas, beliefs, technologies are spread from one area/society to another
What is Glocalisation?
The adaptation of global products/services to suit certain cultures, economic and social contexts
Impacts of cultural diffusion:
- The role of Europe and North America in global cultural change is known as ‘Westernisation’
- An indicator of this is the English language has evolved due to ‘Westernisation’
This is because:
1. It is the dominant language which is used on the web
2. It has become the global language of business, technology and education
How has Global Culture change impacted people?
- Asian diets have changed from low meat, high vegetable diet to eating more fast-food meals i.e. McDonalds
- Cultural attitudes to disability has changed as the media has contributed to making the Paralympic Games into one of the worlds biggest sporting events
What are the 3 factors which have led to an increased ‘westernised’ global culture?
- TNCs
- Global Media
- Migration & Tourism
TNCs:
- The distribution of clothing and food, for example brands such as McDonalds, Nike has created a more common culture due to their widespread availability and consumption
- Some TNCs have introduced uniform products globally i.e. Nike, Apple
- Some TNCs have adapted their products to suit every country for example McDonalds e.g. Menu adaptations (In India most people eat vegetables, they have adapted the menu to suit this)
Global Media:
- Western celebrations of Halloween and Christmas appear in certain TV shows
- BBC contributes to the UKs cultural influence abroad e.g. it’s world service providing news/information from a British perspective to millions of people across the world
- Music: The domination of western artists/music
- Social media: The increased spread of western cultures e.g. TikTok, Instagram, Twitter etc
Migration & Tourism:
- Europeans have travelled around the world sharing their language and customs
- Migration can have an impact on the culture of the host country
- Migrants from western countries bring with them their lifestyle, fashion, food etc
- Migrants moving to certain countries to work may also bring with them business practices and cultural norms which may therefore impact the host country
What is cultural erosion?
A loss of a countries traditions i.e. culture, beliefs, ideas, languages
What is hyper-globalisation?
The acceleration of globalisation, the movement of goods, services, capital, people and knowledge is moving from one place to another at a rapid pace creating greater interconnectedness
What are the negatives of hyper-globalisation?
- People are concerned that as the use of the English language spreads, other languages may be lost
- The worry that ecosystems may become devalued as economic growth is prioritised
What are the positives of hyper-globalisation?
+ The emergence of a global culture is placing more value on equality and reducing discrimination
