When must the ELT be tested?
Every 12 months in accordance with operational test requirements
Every 24 months in accordance with performance test requirements
What does an ELT operational test entail ?
Turning ELT on to test for sound and working on 121.5, first 5 minutes of UTC hour for only 5 seconds
What does an ELT performance test entail?
ELT partially removed + disassembled and tested.
What is a 406MHZ ELT and how should it be tested?
New standard for ELTs, should be tested in accordance with manufacturers instructions
When is an ELT required onboard?
ELT required onboard for all aircrafts operated more than 25NM from home base
What are the exceptions allowed to not have an ELT onboard?
Gliders, balloons, airships, ultralights, gyroplanes, large commercial jets (over Canada)
What are the ELT settings?
Off- will not activate
ARM- will activate in accident
ON- transmitting
Can you still fly a plane with an unserviceable ELT?
AC may be operated for 30 days if ELT becomes unserviceable. As long as ELT is sent for repair ASAP and removed @ first aerodrome possible
Placard must be installed and display date ELT was removed
What should you do if accidentally ELT transmission occurs?
Contact FSS/ nearest ATS unit ASAP inform of location, time, duration, and reset ELT
