Armada sailed through english channel in a crescent formation, made it difficult for english to attack,
Strengths of armada
64 battleships which included 22 huge galleons, 30,000 men, 1900 cannons, extensivd supplies of food and drink, 17,000 well trained soldiers
Weaknesses of armada
England had army of 20,000 men, englands navy was strong, england had 54 battleships (light, fast, long range cannons)
English strengths
Ships smaller, faster, heavier firepower (long range cannons, (spanish ships larger and bulky)
Spanish weaknesses
Cannon ineffective, spanish commander not experienced ag fighting at sea
Tactics of england
Englands use of fireships to break crescent formation- armada found difficult to recover
Weather
Spanish blown northwards into north sea, spanish ships didnt have enough food, sailors struck down by sickness (contaminated water)
