What were Catholic’s beliefs?
Church services were in Latin, the Pope was the head of the Church, Priests couldn’t marry and churches were highly decorated.
What were Protestant’s beliefs?
Bread and wine were given during service, services were in English, they had little decoration, the Queen was the head of the church and Priests could marry.
What were Puritan’s beliefs?
They were very strict Protestant’s that believed that there should be no head of the church
What was Elizabeth’s problem?
England was Catholic before ELizabeth but she was Protestant. The country was very divided between the three religions.
What was the Religious Settlement?
In 1559 it was her compromise between different religions. It said that Protestant was the official religion of England, churches were English and simpler, Priests could marry, Puritan ideas weren’t accepted and Catholics were fined if they didn’t attend church.
What laws were brough in to enforce the Religious Settlement?
The Acts of Supremacy in 1559 made Elizabeth the head of the church and everyone had to sewar an oath. The Act of Uniformity in 1559 made sure that all churches were the same.
What other laws were brought in in 1559?
The Royal Injunctions were a list of instructions for the clergy to ensure they were following the rules. The Act of Exchange said that Elizabeth could use the churches wealth to fund wars and reward followers.
Who were the Episcopacy?
They were the Bishops who ran the church. After the Religious Settlement lots of bishops resigned as they wouldn’t take the Oath of Supremacy because of their Catholic views.
What were the reactions to the Religious Settlement?
In England only 3% of priests refused to take the oath and there was fines introduced for recusancy. Philip II of Spain and the Pope both hoped that Elizabeth would change her mind.
