What were the different classes houses like?

A

Rich-Homes were rebuilt and filled with the latest fashions. They had paintings and gardens with herb beds. Gentry-Rented out land to secure income but had similar, modern houses made out of stone or brick.
Poor-They had small houses with only one room and earth walls and floors.

How did fashion vary between classes?

A

Rich-They had leather shoes, jewellery, gold stitched clothes. Poor-They wore leather shoes, knitted socks,felt hats and only had few changes of shoes due to their poverty.

How were different classes educated?

A

Rich-Daughters were tutored by a governess and they were taught how to run the house. Gentry-attended grammar schools and had long days. Poor-They didn’t have much education and couldn’t afford education for children.

What were the two types of poor?

A

The impotent couldn’t work due to age or health issues and they needed poor relief. The able bodied poor were capable of working but were unable or unwilling to find work.

A

Hooker/angler-carried wooden stick to reach in and steal things
Ruffler-former soldiers who survive by robbing
Clapper dudgeon-tied arsenic to skin to get sympathy when begging
Doxy-female beggar who picked up anything worth money

What laws did the government introduce to try and help the poor?

A

1563-Statute of Artificers made boys do apprentiships
1576-Act for the relief of the poor allowed jobs to be found for the poor. 1598-Act for the relief of the poor gave children chances to learn crafts. 1601-Poor law made the government responsible for the poor.

A
