How does Elizabeth become Queen?

A

Her father died when she was 13 and her brother Edward became King. After Edward died, Mary became Queen but Mary also died, making Elizabeth Queen at the age of 25 in 1558.

What were royal progresses?

A

Elizabeth toured during the summer months, visiting the countryside and staying at nobles houses. It was a form of propaganda and allowed Elizabeth to be seen by her subjects.

A

It was very colourful and lots of people attended. It was a long procession on January 12th 159 from Whitehall to the Tower of London.

A

Elizabeth created competition between advisers like William Cecil and Robert Dudley in order to encourage them to work harder and oppose each other rather then her.

A

It was a body of advisers appointed by the Queen. They met 2-3 times a week but they weren’t the government or parliament, they just advised her.

What were the main jobs in the local government?

A

Lord Lieutenant-In charge of Militia and supervised Justices of Peace, Overseer of the poor-helps the poor and distribute money for them, Justices of peace-maintain law and order but aren’t paid, Parish constable-looked after taverns and inns and prevented trespassing.

How was parliament different in Elizabethan times?

A

They only met when Elizabeth called it, usually to pass laws, get advice and support or to raise taxes. They only met 13 times in her reign and for 26 years there was no parliament.

A

A debt which Elizabeth inherited from Mary which was £227000 and she had to pay it off by raising taxes.
