Elimination Flashcards
Anatomy of the Colon (large intestine)
Cecum ascending colon transverse colon descending colon sigmoid colon anus
Physiology of the Colon (large intestine)
absorption (large amount of H2O)
secretion
elimination (waste and gas) via peristalsis
Rectum
- Final part of large intestine
- Remains empty until deification
Anus
Sensation from internal and external sphincters allow person to expel waste and gas.
Peristalsis
Involuntary contraction that propels food through the length of the GI tract.
Sphincter
A ring of muscles that voluntarily allow passage/blockage of food/waste.
Gastrocolic reflex
Neurological response to eating which triggers peristalsis and normal digestion
Bladder
Urine drains from kidney’s via ureters to bladder; bladder stores urine until urge to expel urine.
Urethra
Urine travels from bladder out urethra through the urethral meatus.
Internal sphincter
Made up of skeletal muscles called pelvic floor muscles. PFM support bladder and help control continence.
External sphincter
Made of striated muscles helps control voluntary release of urine.
