What are the Elements of Movement?
Time, Space, Energy
What are the sub divisions of time?
Rhythm, Speed/Tempo, Pulse, Duration, Meter, Accent, , Silence or Pause
Speed/Tempo
how fast or slow the movement is executed
Duration
length of time expanded throughout the movement phrase. Can refer to length of time for a single movement, a phrase a section of the dance a suite of dancers a whole performance
Accent
additional stress, accent placed on musical notes and accompanying movement.
What are the sub divisions of space?
shape, direction, dimension, level, eye body focus, pathways
Direction
direction of the movement of the dancers upwards, downwards, side, diagonally or direction dancer is travelling
Level
aspect of height or dimension which movement occurs
Pathways
movement that travels through the space direct or indirect
What are the sub divisions of energy? (including qualities of movement)
force, flow, sustained, suspension, vibratory, percussion,swinging, collapsing
Flow
efficiency and use of movement
Suspension
no apparent stop between movement
Percussion
an energy action, jerky quick, heavy staccato actions
Collapsing
release of muscle tension-sinking action
Rhythm
Grouping of beats, accents and pulses. Rhythm can be explored both every and unevenly.
Pulse
Steady underlining continuous beat.
Meter
Division of the musical score (time signature).
Silence or pause (between movements)
These are used to create regular and irregular rhythmic patterns.
Shape (Negative shape positive shape)
Scriptural design of the body of the group in the space. Curved, round, linear, straight, angular.
Dimension
Size of the dancer’s personal movement shape. Can also Refer to size of group expanded or tight.
Eye body focus
Concentration on a certain point in the space demonstrated by eyes of body.
Force
Effort actions, muscle tension.
Sustained
Pausing between downward and upward pull of gravity.
Vibratory
Rapid reoccurring movements.
Swinging
Over curves and under curves made by the arms, legs, head as well as weight transference movement perfumed in a swinging rhythmical action.
