Choreographic Devices Flashcards
What is a MOTIF?
An action which helps communicate the artistic intention and is therefore repeated or developed through variations in time, space and/or energy.
What are the choreographic devices?
MOTIF, Abstraction, Accumulation, Augmentation, Distortion, Embellishment, Insertion, Inversion, Rearrangement, Repetition, Retrograde, Transposition
What is Inversion?
A process for manipulating a motif or phrase where the position of the body is reversed as the movement is performed, for example either upside down or reversed laterally
What is Insertion?
Adding new material into the movement
What is Abstraction?
The process of altering or reducing the realistic appearance/features of the original inspiration while maintaining the ‘essence’ of the idea.
What is Accumulation?
New movements are added to exsisting movements in a successive manner, for example 12, 123, 1234.
What is Augmentation?
Making the movement larger
What is Distortion?
Twisting out of shape, deforming; a process which manipulates the shape or structure of the motif or phrase. May include different movement qualities.
What is Embellishment?
Adding detail to the movement such as a hand or head move.
What is Rearrangement?
Movement is taken apart and reorganised into the desired order to create progression
What is Repetition?
A movement motif or phrase repeated exactly the same
What is Retrograde?
A motif or phrase performed backwards
What is Transposition?
Performing the movement/motif/phrase with a different body part
