Elements Of Art Flashcards
what is a line
a continuos mark made on a surface by a moving point. it can be 2D (pencil mark on paper)or 3D (wire) or and implied line (the edge of a shape or form )
what is an outline
a line that joins itself to create shapes. the lines re the same thickness throughout
what are contour lines
they define edges, they also define the edges of shapes within a form
what can lines be
dark bold thick thin long rhythmic fracile curved jagged sensitive light broken
what can lines do
they can express emotion
what emotions can line express
anger depression love joy energy loneliness peace concusion tranquillity
what do horizontal lines do
they create a feeling of peace and calm
what do vertical lines do
create the feeling of strength and power
what do diagonal lines do
they create a feeling of movement and restlessness
what is shape
a 2D area with a recognizable boundary
what is form
a 3D shape. it has height, width and depth. it also refers to the illusion of volume in a 2d
what are the formal elements of art
line shape and form tone texture colour space (She Can Learn From SSTTudying)
what are the two categories that shape and form can be divided into
organic and inorganic (geometric)
what are organic forms
they are found in nature
what are inorganic/geometric forms
they are man made and have rigid/ geometric outlines
what is positive space
the main shape or object
what is negative shape
the space or background that surrounds the positive space
what are tonal values
they refer to the degree of light and dark in an artwork.
forms do not have an outline, what are they defied by in real life
by light. without light we do not see form or tonal values.
what must we do we working with tonal values
look carefully at how light falls on a form
what do tonal values do
they are the representation of a 3D object on a 2D surface
what is chiaroscuro
the depicting in 2D art of he effect of light and shadow as a means of rendering solidity of bodies, especially when the are strongly contrasted
what is texture
the surface quality of feel of an object
what are some different textures
coarse smooth slimy bristly furry matted scratchy wrinkled
what is simulated texture
found in 2D artworkds. it can be seen but not touched
what is real texture
it is an actual part of the artwork and it can be felt
what is a hue
the name of a colour ( eg. red, blue ect)
what are primary colours
they are colours that cannot be made from mixing together other colours
what are the primary colours
red
yellow
blue
what are secondary colours
they are made by mixing two primary colours
what are the secondary colours
orange
purple
green
how do you make orange
red and yellow
how do you make green
yellow and blue
how do you make purple
blue and red
what are intermediate colours
they are between the primary and secondary colours in the colour wheel
what are the intermediate colours
red-orange yellow-orange yellow-green blue-green blue-purple red-purple
what is brown
a tertiary colour
how is brown made
by mixing two complementary colours
what is black
the presence of all colours
what is white
the absence of all colours
what are tints
colours mixed with white
what are shades
colours mixed with black
what is intensity of colour
it relates to the brightness or dullness of colour
what are complementary colours
colours that are directly opposite on the colour wheel
what are the complementary colours
red and green
yellow and purple
blue and orange
what is a monochromatic painting
a painting in which only a variation of hues are used. a pure hue is used alone with black and/or white or mixed with black and/or white
what is an analogous colour scheme
a colour scheme consisting of hues adjasent to one another on the colour wheel. each contain the same hue. eg - yellow-green, green and blue-green all have the same hue green
what is a polychromatic colour scheme
te random use of hues and their variations
what is another way for colours to be classified
by warm and cold
what are warm colours
colours that seem to come towards the viewer in space
what are the warm colours
red, yellow and orange
what are cold colours
colours that seen to go to the back of the painting. they have a calming effect on the viewer
what are the cold colours
blue, green and lemon-green
what does space play an important role in
architecture. the architect must create a pleasing, functional and interesting space in which people can work, play and live
what is a sculpture
it is a 3D object that occupies space, has volume and can be viewed from any direction. the sculpture creates a unique relationship between form and space, or positive and negative
how do artist create a feeling of 3D space and depth
through the use of perspective
what is linear perspective
based on the observation that paralell lines appear to meet on the horizon at one or more vanishing points. objects become smaller as they are positioned farther awat
what is aerial perspective
atmospheric perspective. it is when the atmosphere softens shapes and colours in the sistance. when you are near a tree, you can see individual branches and leaves. at a distance they appear to blend together
what is foreshortening
it is the shortening of the depth dimension
