Difference Between African And Western Art Flashcards

1
Q

What are the characteristics of traditional African art

A

It has a function- integration of life
If it become decayed, another one is made
Conceptual; simplified with strong geometrical shapes; proportions are not realistic/ naturalistic ( head too large for body)
Artworks are often given movement; used in dances and rituals where they are worn or carried
Never seen in isolation; part of a combination of rituals, movements and drama; the masks are seen in movement worn by a costumed dancer, accompanied by music, singing and clapping
Art in most cases, been made to be used, not only looked at. Some masks are not meant to be seen by the entire community, except by a selected hierarchy or gilts and chronically and are hidden away after use. This is common in especially east and west Africa
Are not preserved as they are usually buried after the ritual; generally made of wood and adorned with feathers, beads, seeds, and animal skins- materials which decay quickly, especially in the climate of the rainforests. Masks which become decay are simply replaced
