Elements, Mixtures and Compunds Flashcards
Single atoms:
Atoms that do not join up with other atoms.
Molecules of an element:
When atoms of the same element join together to get a molecule from that element
Compunds:
A compound is made when different atoms join together by chemical bonds.
Mixture:
A mixture is made from a substance that are not chemically joined.
Define the periodic table:
A chart of elements.
The rows are called period.
The colomns are called groups.
Molecules:
2 or more atoms connected by chemical bonds.
What type of bond does a molecule have?
Ionic
What type of bond does a compund have?
Metallic or ionic
Examples of molecules:
Hydrogen
Chlorine
Nitrogen
Examples of compund:
Carbon dioxide
Water
Sodium chloride
What is a chemical change?
A chemical change is irreversible.
What is a physical change?
It is a temporary change.
What is the chemical change for sodium hydroxide?
NaOH
What is the chemical change for sodium chloride?
NaCl
What is the chemical change for nitrogen?
N2
What is the chemical change for oxygen?
O2
What is the chemical change for chlorine?
Cl2
What is the chemical change for hydrogen chloride?
HCl
Iron + oxygen = ?
Iron oxide
Magnessium + chlorine = ?
Magnessium chloride
Purity:
Purity is a way to describe how much of specific element is in a mixture.
Alloy:
Alloy is a mixture of elements of which at least one is a metal.
Concentration:
The proportion of solute to solvent.
What is diffusion?
It is the mixing of particles within a liquid or gas until it has become evenly spread out.
Why does diffusion occur?
It occurs due to random movement.
Where does diffusion occur?
Diffusion does not happen in solids but it happens in liquids and gases.
Examples of diffusion?
Deoderant
Perfume
