Element One, Vine species and varieties part 1 Flashcards
Vitis Vinifera can be subdivided into two, called?
Vitis Vinifera Sativa
Vitis Vinifera Silvestris
Explain Vitis Vinifera Sativa!
The cultivated vine, with 5-10.000 wine-producing varieties. Hermaphroditic, good fruit set and relatively large fruit
Explain Vitis Vinifera Silverstris!
Wild European vines, not usually hermaphrodite and the ancestor to all of modern grape varieties. Most eliminated by Phylloxera
Explain Vitis Lambusca!
Found in the wild in north eastern US, strongly flavoured and dark berrys. With “foxy” aromas.. Often used as parent for hybrids but not for rootstock.
Explain Vitis Riparia!
Found wild on river bank and alluvial soil in central-eastern parts of north America. Used as rootstock - low in vigour, surface rooting and encourage early ripening. Don`t work in chalky soils, due to iron deficiency.
Explain Vitis Rupestris!
found wild on light soils in southern centre of us, used as a rootstock. Rupestris rootstocks are vigorous, deep rooting system with susceptible to chlorosis. works in poor soils with limited water.
Explain Vitis Berlandieri!
Like Chalky soils souther Us And Mexico. Vigorous and and deep rooting and high resistance to chlorosis. How ever poor ability to root, therefore often used with Riparia or rupestris.
