Machinery Hierarchy of Controls
- Fixed guards
- Other guards or protection devices
- Protective devices (Jigs, Holders, Push Sticks)
- Information, Instruction, Training and Supervision
what is Fixed Guards?
physical barrier not connected to machine controls (no moving parts + requires a tool to remove it)
advantage + disadvantages of fixed guards:
Adva: Minimal maintenance Only defeated by deliberate act Only visual inspection May protect against other hazards e.g. noise, dust, ejection of materials
Disad:
Not linked to machine controls
No protection when removed
Access to dangerous parts when removed
More difficult to remove not practical when frequent access required
Tends to be left unfixed when frequent access required
May hamper visibility
what is Interlock Guard?
Linked to the machine controls so that when the machine is in a dangerous condition the guard cannot be opened or opening the guard causes the machine to become safe
Advantages + disadvantages of interlock guard:
Adv: Allow safe access for feeding materials Convenient to use Less likely to be deliberately defeated Speeds up operations
Disadv: Increase the complexity of the machine Difficult to test and maintain May need a brake or time delay Components could fail in service Regular maintenance required May not fail to safety
