ELECTRONS AND BONDING Flashcards
WHAT IS AN ATOMIC ORBITAL
a region around the nucleus that can hold up to 2 electrons with opposite spins
ORDER OF ELECTRON CONFIGURATION UP TO 4D
1s 2s 2p 3s 3p 4s 3d 4p 4d
WHAT IS IONIC BONDING
the electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions
ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY OF IONIC COMPOUNDS
Not a conductor in solid state as ions aren’t free to move, but once dissolved in water the ionic compound will conduct electricity as the ions are free to move as mobile charge carriers
SUMAMARY OF IONIC COMPOUND PROPERTIES
x3
-high melting and boiling points
-dissolve in polar substances
-conduct electricity in liquid state or aqueous solution
WHAT IS COVALENT BONDING
the electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of the bonded aroms
what is a dative covalent bond
A covalent bond in which both electrons come from the same atom
