Electronic Structure Flashcards
Metal properties
- shiny
- high boiling and melting point
- solid at room temperature
- malleable when solid
- ductile when solid
- good conductor of electricity and thermal energy
Non metal properties
- dull
- low boiling and melting point
- gas at room temperature
- brittle when solid
- non ductile when solid
- poor conductors (they are actually insulators)
Chemical properties
A characteristic of a substance determined only by studying its chemical reactions
Metal chemical properties
- loose electrons
- form positive ions (negative charge)
- do not react with metals, but can for alloys with them
Non metal chemical properties
- non metals gain electrons
- have a positive ion (negative charge)
- non metals can react with each other, and form compounds
What happens when a metal dissolves in water
It forms an alkaline solution
What happens when a non mental dissolves in water
It forms an acidic solution
What type of elements is ionic bonding between
Metal + non metal
What type of elements is covalent bonding between
Non metal + non metal
Do non metals loose or gain electrons
Gain
Do metals loose or gain electrons
Loose
What are periods
The horizontal rows
What are groups
The vertical columns
What do the groups show
They show the total number of electrons in an elements outer shell
What do the periods show
The total number of shells in the element
