Electronegativity Flashcards
What is electronegativity?
The power of an atom to attract the electron density in a covalent bond towards itself
What is electron density?
The way the negative charge is distributed throughout the molecule
What is a dipole?
A pair of equal and oppositely charged poles separated
What are the three things electronegativity depends on?
The nuclear charge
The distance between the nucleus and valence electrons
The shielding of the nuclear charge
What are the trends in electronegativity?
Going up a group in the periodic table, electronegativity increases ~ Atoms get smaller and less shielding so greater electronegativity
Increases across a period
What is a pure covalent bond?
Non polar
Electrons are shared evenly
What is polarity?
The unequal sharing of electrons between atoms
What is the difference between ionic and pure ionic?
Pure ionic has a larger electronegative difference
