3.12 Polymerisation Flashcards
1
Q
When are addition polymers formed?
A
- When unsaturated monomers react to form polymers
- Monomer forms basic repeating unit
2
Q
Why are poly(alkene)’s not biodegradable?
A
- Addition polymers are chemically inert
- Contain lots of strong covalent bonds which require lots of energy to break so not biodegradable
3
Q
How are condensation polymers formed?
A
- Two monomers which contain two functional groups
- Produce a small molecule e.g. H2O or HCl
4
Q
What are the possible reactants and products for a poly ester?
A
-Diol + Carboxylic acid = Ester + Water
- One monomer with both alcohol and carboxyl group x 2 = Ester + water
- Diol + Acyl chloride = Ester + HCl
5
Q
What are the reactants and products for Poly(amides)
A
- Dicarboxylic acid + diamine = Poly amide + 2nWater
- Diacyl chloride + diamine = Poly amide + 2nHCl
