Electron Transport Chain Flashcards
How many protein complexes in the ETC?
4
Why is the electron transport chain so important?
It extracts all the potential energy in NADH and FADH2 which allows it to synthesize more ATP
How much ATP is produced in the ETC?
32 or 34
What is the last protein complex used to pull H+ back across the inner membrane called?
ATP synthase
How do protein complexes I, III, IV pull electrons through the ETC?
They are arranged in increasing electronegativity to pull the electrons along
What role does oxygen play in the ETC?
Oxygen is the final electron acceptor, pulling electrons from complex IV. This allows the flow of electrons to continue and H+ to continue being pumped through the inner membrane.
Describe chemiosmosis.
Chemiosmosis uses the build up force (high gradient, charged protons) to move H+ through ATP synthase providing the energy needed to phosphorylate ATP
Why does NADH produce more ATP than FADH2?
FADH2 is oxidized, and passes its electrons to the ETC further down the chain, resulting in fewer H+ being pumped across.
