Energy & ATP Flashcards
Describe what anabolic reactions are?
Reactions that build molecules
What is metabolism?
The chemical processes that occur within a living organism to maintain life
What is a catabolic reaction?
A reaction that breaks down molecules. Stored energy is released as bonds are broken
What is the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics?
Some energy in any reaction is lost to an unusable/unwanted form. Often thermal (heat) energy. Nothing is 100% efficient.
What is the energy from ATP used for
Cell work - reproduction, movement, growth, repair….everything!
What is the 1st Law of Thermodynamics ?
Energy gets converted from one form to another and energy cannot be created or destroyed
Where do we find the energy used for cell respiration?
Stored energy (molecules store potential energy in their bonds) often in C-H bonds
What is required to start a reaction?
Energy
Does making bonds release or require energy?
Releases (Electron Affinity)
Exergonic reactions
Energy is released
Endergonic reactions
Energy is absorbed
Breaking bonds releases or requires energy
Requires (Ionization Energy)
Why do we use ATP and not simply any other energy carrying molecules.
Atp has specific properties that are important for biochemical reactions
It can be created and used immediately
It is reliable and predictable
Describe the ATP cycle
ATP is hydrolzed to produce ADP + Pi + energy
ADP + Pi through condensation reaction forms ATP with the addition of energy
What are the 2 types of phosphorylation
Substrate and Oxidative Phosphorylation
