Electrolysis Flashcards
What us electrolysis?
Using electricity to split ionic compounds
What are the main uses of electrolysis?
Extracting metals
Making chlorine gas
Making hydrogen gas
Making soaps
What are molten/dissolved ionic compounds called?
Electrolyte
Why must the compound be dissolved ?
Because the ions are free to moves so they can carry charge so they can conduct electricity
Why are solid compounds not electrolytes?
Because their ions cannot move so they can’t carry charge so they cannot conduct electricity
What are the two electrodes called?
Cathode (negative)
Anode (positive)
Where does positive ions go to?
Cathode
Where does negative ions go to?
Anode
Where does oxidation occur?
Anode
Where does reduction occur?
Cathode
What is reduction?
Gain of electrons
What is oxidation?
Loss of electrons
Why is there a lamp in the circuit?
As it confirms electrical conductivity through a complete circuit
Why is there a cell?
A power supply is the source of electrical current
What is aqueous?
When a substance is dissolved in water to form a solution
What does it mean if the solution is an aqueous?
You need to factor the H2O into the equation
What does water split under the current?
H+ and OH-
What product will be formed at the cathode?
Will be the least reactive
What happens if one of the negative ions are a halide at the anode?
The halide will be discharged
What happens if there is no halides at the anode?
The hydroxide will be discharged to form O2
What is left overall if you started with copper chlorine (aq) ?
Copper + chlorine + water
