electrolysis Flashcards
what is electrolysis?
the breaking down of a substance using electric current
what do you call the compound broken down?
the electrolyte
what are electrodes
conducting rods dipped into the electrolyte
cathode
negative electrode
anode
positive electrode
why are the electrodes made up of an unreactive substance?
so that they do not react with the electrolyte / products of the reaction
where do posituve ions move
cathode
where do negative ions move
anode
why do ionic substances have to be melted or dissolved in water?
so that their ions can move freely and carry their charge to the electrodes
why is it difficult to predict what will form at the electrodes when in water?
water forms ions
what happens to ions when they reach the electrodes
they either lose or gain electrons to become neutral atoms
what happens to negative ions
lose electrons
what happens to positive ions
gain electrons
what is oxidation?
losing electrons
what is reduction?
gaining electrons
