electricity - the national grid Flashcards
what does the national grid do?
it disputes electricity across the country
what does increasing voltage do to the current?
increases the current
what does decreasing the voltage do to the current?
decreases the current
what is the national grid system - how does the electricity go around the country?
power station to step up transformer to a pile on to a step down transformer to the consumer
what do transformers do?
change voltages and currents in transmission lines
how is a transformer formed?
from two coils of wire around a magnetic core
what does the number of coils determine?
determines whether the transformer steps up the voltage of steps down the voltage
if there are more turns on the secondary coil than the primary coil it is a stepup transformer
if there are more turns on the primary coil than the secondary coil it is a step down transformer
what is a step up transformer used for?
to increase the voltage and reduce the current - less current means less energy is lost through heating the wire
what does a step down voltage do?
makes the voltage safer
what will the electrical current do when it flows through the wire and heat up?
the energy will dissipate to the surrounding
what can you do to ensure the minimum amount of energy is lost?
make cables thick so that their resistance is low
make the voltages higher to reduce the current through the transmission lines
