electricity - fuses Flashcards
what is a fuse connected to?
the live pin of a 3 pin plug
what is a fuse?
a weak link in the circuit which prevents the appliance from overheating if too much current flows. The fuse melts (blows) cutting of the current making it safe
what happens if a large electrical current flows through a piece of wire?
the wire will heat up and glow
what happens when to much current flows through the wire?
the wire will melt
what type of appliances have an Earth wire?
appliances with metal casings
what does RCCB stand for?
residual current circuit breaker
what are the advantages of RCCBs?
they are more sensitive than a wire fuse
they cut the current more quickly than a wire fuse
they are easy to reset
they can be used where there is not Earth connection
what is the equation for power, with energy and time?
power = energy/time
is house wiring in series or parallel
parallel
why is house wiring is parallel?
so all sockets do not need to be turned on to work
what is the equation for power, current and potential difference?
power = current x potential difference
what is the power, current and resistance?
power = current2 - squared - x resistance
what colour is the live wire
brown
what does a live wire do
carries current to the appliance
what colour is the neutral wire
blue
