Electricity and Magnetism Flashcards
What elements are able to be easily magnetized and attracted to a magnet?
Iron, nickel, Colbalt
What are magnetic domains, and what happens to them when a magnet is demagnetized?
Domains are group of atoms whose magnetic fields are aligned. When it is demagnetized, the fields will point in different directions
Describe the magnetic field lines around a bar magnet and the reletive strength and direction of the magnetic force at various places in the field
Magnetic fields around a bar magnet have the following properties
- The poles will always exert a force. From North, and South, a straight line will appear
- The magnetic field connects the North and South poles
- The closer the field lines, the stronger they are
- Near the poles, the strength will the at its highest
Describe the Behavior of magnetic poles
Unlike: Attract
Like: Repel
What happens to electrically charged particles in a magnetic field
In a magnetic field, the subatomic particles are always moving (electron spin, protons etc) However, the atoms, usually cancel out and leave the atom neutral. In a magnetic field, with a current, it is usually moving. If there is no current, but just a wire, then the magnetic field has to be able to move in order for the electrically charged particles to move
When an electric cureent flows through a conductor, it will create a magnetic field in what direction?
You have to use the right hand rule for this. To use the right hand rule, do the following.
- Hold the pencil the way that the current is flowing
- Then, where your fingers are curling is the direction of the magnetic field
- Where your knuckles are pointing is the (NSWE) direction of the magnetic field
What is an electromagnet, and how is it built?
An electomagnet is essentially a wire, that is wrapped into coils with a magnetic bar (iron, nickel, colbalt) inserted through the middle.
Some ways to increase the strength is to insert a stronger magnet, increase the current, or tighten the coils
What is the difference between an electromagnet and a permanent magnet
An electromagnet will stop once the current is switched offf. However, a permanent magnet retains its properties through whatever.
What is the Basic Explaination of An Electric Motor
There are 4 electromagnets.
- The electromagnets are in the same direction,(NS)
