Electricity Flashcards
Define a short circuit
A short circuit is a path of very low resistance…
Define: terminal potential difference
The potential difference across the terminals of a battery when there is a current in the circuit.
Define:Internal resistance
Internal resistance is the amount of resistance across the terminals of a battery.
Define: power
Power is the rate at which electrical energy is converted into other forms of energy in an electric circuit.
Power is defined as the amount of electrical energy delivered by a battery per second or the amount of electrical energy dissipated in a resistor per second.
Define:a parallel circuit
A parallel circuit is when the resistors in the circuit are placed on different pathways
Define: a series circuit
A series circuit is when the resistors are places one after each other
Define: a non-ohmic conductor
A non ohmic conductor is a conductor which has a resistance which varies with the current.
Define: a ohmic conductor
An ohmic conductor is a conductor where the resistance does not vary with the current
Define: conventional current
Conventional current is the direction Positive charge moves in a circuit. Positive charge moves from the positive terminal of a battery to the negative terminal.
Define: electron flow
Electron flow is the direction in which electrons move in a metal. Electrons move from the negative terminal to the positive terminal.
Define: emf
Emf is the total energy supplied per coulomb of charge by the battery.
Define: ohms law
Ohms law states that the current is directly proportional to the potential difference across the conductor at constant temperature
Define: potential difference
Potential difference between two points in a circuit is defined as the amount of work done (w) per coulomb of charge between these two points.
Define: current
Current is the rate of flow of charge. Or in other words current is the quantity of charge that passes a point in the circuit per second
Define: Resistance
Resistance is defined as a materials opposition to the flow of electric current
