Electricity Flashcards
1
Q
2 types of circuits
A
- Series
2. Parallel
2
Q
What is electricity and S.I unit
A
- Form of energy made available by the flow of electric charge (electric current) in a conductor
> joule (J)
3
Q
Sources of electricity
A
- Battery
- Cell (Singular of battery?)
4
Q
Electric current and S.I unit
A
- Rate of flow of electric charge/ electricity
> Ampere
5
Q
Function of ammeter and how is is used
A
- Measure the electric current
> To measure electric current in circuit, connected in series circuit
6
Q
Purpose of volmeter and how it’s meant to be used
A
- Measure voltage across a component
- Connected parallel to the component
7
Q
4 properties of series circuit
A
- One path for current to flow through
- Same current flows through every component
- Circuit open at any point, no current would flow
- *Total voltage across the source is equal to the sum of all the voltages across each component
(think of it as a voltage divider)
8
Q
4 properties of a parallel circuit
A
- More than 1 path for current to flow through
- Sum of the current through each path is equal to the total current that flows through the source
- If one path is open, current will still flow in all other paths
- *Voltage is the same across the separate branches (across the same 2 points)
9
Q
What is voltage
A
The amount of energy
10
Q
Purpose of a resistor
A
Slow down the rate at which the electric current flows (larger resistance, smaller the current)
11
Q
Purpose of a rheostat
A
- Resistance value can be adjusted
- Usually used to control current (e.g to control brightness of lamp)
