Elbow pathology Flashcards
Common name for lateral epicondylitis
Tennis elbow
Pathology of lateral epicondylitis
Overuse injury to the common extensor tendon
Symptoms of lateral epicondylitis
Pain over lateral elbow (worse on gripping), Decreased grip strength
Signs of lateral epicondylitis
Tenderness over lateral elbow, Pain on resisted wrist extension
Investigations for lateral epicondylitis
MRI
Management for lateral epicondylitis
Conservative: Brace, Ice, Physiotherapy
Medical: NSAIDs, Steroid injections
Surgical: Extensor tendon release/debridement
Common name for medial epicondylitis
Golfer’s elbow
Pathology of medial epicondylitis
Overuse injury of the flexor/pronator tendons
Symptoms of medial epicondylitis
Pain over medial elbow (Worse on flexion/pronation)
Signs of medial epicondylitis
Tenderness over the medial epicondyle, Pain on resisted wrist flexion
Investigations for medial epicondylitis
MRI
Management of medial epicondylitis
Conservative: Rest, Ice, Physiotherapy, Brace
Medical: NSAIDs, Steroid injections
Surgical: Flexor tendon debridement/reattachment
Symptoms of elbow osteoarthritis
Pain (progressive), Stiffness on extension, Locking
Signs of elbow osteoarthritis
Decreased range of movement
Investigations for elbow osteoarthritis
X-ray, CT
