What is epicondylitis?
Inflammation where the tendons of the forearm insert into the epicondyles at the elbow
What type of injury is epicondylitis?
Repetitive strain injury
What age group is affected?
Middle age
What is the presentation of epicondylitis?
Symptoms worsen over weeks to months
Pain and tenderness at epicondyle that radiates down the forearm
Weakness in grip strength
What is lateral epicondylitis also called?
Tennis elbow
What is medial epicondylitis also called?
Golfer’s elbow
What is the management of epicondylitis?
Usually self limiting and resolves with time
Rest
Adapt activities
Analgesia
Elbow brace/strap
Steroid injections
What is olecranon bursitis?
Inflammation and swelling over the elbow bursa
What is the pathology of olecranon bursitis?
Thickening of the synovial membrane and increased fluid production, causing swelling
What causes olecranon bursitis?
Friction from repetitive movements
Trauma
Inflammatory conditions
Infection- septic bursitis
What are the features of bursitis?
Young man
Elbow is swollen, warm, tender and fluid-filled
What is an important differential?
Septic arthritis
What is routine investigation for bursitis when infection is suspected?
Aspiration of fluid from bursa
Microscopy and culture of fluid
What are the management options?
Rest
Ice
Compression
Analgesia
Protect elbow from pressure
Aspirate to relieve pressure
Antibiotics
What is cubital tunnel syndrome?
Entrapment of ulnar nerve
