Elbow Common Presentations: Bicep and Tricep pathology Flashcards
distal bicep tendinopathy history
repetitive elbow extension with pronation or repetitive flexion with stressful pronation/supination
pain location with distal bicep tendinopathy
anterior distal upper arm
palpation tenderness for distal bicep tendinopathy
tender at distal biceps tendon
ROM/MMT for distal bicep tendinopathy
ROM: pain with passive shoulder extension and elbow extension
MMT: pain with elbow flexion and supination
intervention for distal bicep tendinopathy
- pain/inflammation management
- regain strength, endurance, flexibility
- address and kinetic chain impairments
- cross friction
- eccentrics
history for tricep tendinopathy
stems from overuse, repetitive extension, repetitive heavy lifting
pain location at tricep tendinopathy
posterior elbow
palpation tenderness of tricep tendinopathy
tender at triceps tendon insertion site
ROM/MMT for tricep tendinopathy
ROM: passive shoulder flexion painful
MMT: elbow extension
interventions for tricep tendinopathy
- pain/inflammation management
- regain strength, endurance, flexibility
- address and kinetic chain impairments
- cross friction
- eccentrics
distal bicep tendon rupture
- mainly males
- 50 years old and up
MOI for distal bicep rupture
sudden contracture of biceps against significant load
history for distal bicep rupture
acute, sharp, tearing pain when injury occurs, usually dull ache after acute pain
pain location for distal bicep rupture
anterior elbow
palpation tenderness for bicep tendon rupture
tender at distal bicep rupture
integumentary for distal bicep rupture
bruising
ROM/MMT for distal bicep rupture
ROM: passive elbow extension and pronation
MMT: pain and weakness of supination > elbow flexion
interventions for distal bicep rupture
- sugery common
- post op elbow protected for 6-8 weeks
- after 6-8 weeks unrestricted ROM and gentle strengthening commonly initiated
- return to unrestricted activity not allowed for minima of 6 months typically
if surgery doesn’t happen for a distal bicep rupture, what strength is lost
88% loss of elbow flexion
74% loss of supination
tricep tendon rupture MOI
- uncommon
- deceleration during elbow extension, FOOSH
