Elbow Common Presentations: Medial epicondylitis & lateral epicondylitis Flashcards
medial epicondylitis
- inflammation of common flexor tendon at the elbow
- golfer’s elbow
- not as common as lateral
history of medial epicondylitis
- most often due to overuse
- less commonly due to direct trauma
pain location for medial epicondylitis
medial elbow
palpation tenderness for medial epicondylitis
tender at medial epicondyle and at times the flexor and pronator muscle bellies
ROM/MMT for medial epicondylitis
ROM: pain with passive wrist extension with elbow extended and forearm supinated
MMT: pain with resisted wrist flexion
interventions for medial epicondylitis
- conservative therapy
- pain/inflammation management
- focus on regaining strength, endurance and flexibility
- address kinetic chain impairments
- cross friction massage to tendon
- eccentrics
- bracing
lateral epicondylitis
- inflammation of common extensor tendon at elbow
- can be traumatic, commonly overuse injury
- tennis elbow
- impacts professions that require repeated or forceful manual tasks and repetitive gripping
history of lateral epicondylitis
- most often due to overuse
- less commonly due to direct trauma
- pain with gripping and grasping items
pain location for lateral epicondylitis
- lateral elbow and sometimes forearm
- can get pain from picking something up
palpation tenderness for lateral epicondylitis
tender at lateral epicondyle and sometimes extensor muscle bellies
ROM/MMT for lateral epicondylitis
ROM: pain with passive wrist flexion with elbow extended and forearm pronated
MMT: painful with wrist extension and radial deviation
intervention for lateral epicondylitis
- conservative therapy
- pain/inflammation management
- focus on regaining strength, endurance and flexibility
- address kinetic chain impairments
- cross friction massage to tendon
- eccentrics
- bracing
