Elbow bones Flashcards
How many bones and which ones compose the elbow?
3 bones: the ulna, radius and humerus
Which bone is on the lateral side and which one on the medial side of the forearm?
The ulna is always on the medial side and the radius is on the lateral side (same as the thumb) of the forearm
The distal end bony points of the humerus on the posterior side are:
olecranon fossa (receives the olecranon process of ulna), lateral and medial epicondyle, lateral and medial supracondylar ridges,
The distal end bony points of the humerus on the anterior side are:
coronoid fossa (at the medial side of the humerus, proximal to trochlea, receives the coronoid process of ulna), radial fossa (on the lateral side of the humerus, proximal to the capitulum, receives the head of the radius), the trochlea (articulates with the trochlea notch of ulna making a hinge joint)
What are the joints in the elbow?
- The distal humerus and the proximal ulna articulate to form the humero-ulnar joint
- The distal humerus articulates with the radius to form the humero-radial joint
The ulna sits on the medial or lateral side of forearm?
Sits on the medial side of the forearm and runs parallel with the radius bone
Ulna allows supination and pronation because it is a
stabilising bone allowing the radius to move around it
At the proximal ulnar end the joints present are
- humero-ulnar joint (elbow joint)
- proximal radio-ulnar joint
Bony points of the proximal end of the ulna are:
- olecranon process (pos./triceps brachi insertion/ articulates with the olecranon fossa of humerus)
- coronoid process (ant./brachialis insertion)
- trochlear notch (articulates with trochlea of humerus)
- radial notch (lateral aspect/ accomodates the head of the radius
The ligament that attaches to the anterior and posterior of radial notch and wraps around the head of radius holding it in place
ANULAR LIGAMENT
The ANULAR LIGAMENT
It attaches to the anterior and posterior of radial notch and wraps around the head of radius holding it in place
The ulnar shaft has how many borders and surfaces, name them
3 borders:
- anterior
- posterior
- interosseous
3 surfaces:
- anterior
- posterior
- medial
The distal end of the ulna is _____ than the proximal end in diameter
smaller
The head of ulna (distal) articulates with the ulnar _____ of the ______
notch/ radius
Distal ulna has a styloid process, articular disc present and its not part of the ______ joint
joint
The humerus articulates with the ulna and the radius, the articulations are known as
> humero-ulnar joint
>humero-radial joint
The radius is positioned on the _____ side of the forearm
lateral
The radius pivots around the
ulna
