Elbow and Wrist Flashcards
What is medial epicondylitis?
Repetitive flexion (forehand shots) or idiopathic pain near the medial epicondyle.
What is another term for medial epicondylitis?
Golfer’s elbow
What is lateral epicondylitis?
Repeitive extension (backhand shots) or idiopathic motion that results in pain near the lateral epicondyle.
What is another name for lateral epicondylitis?
Tennis Elbow
What are the names of the bones in the wrist?
“So Long To Pinky, Here Comes The Thumb”
- Scaphoid
- Lunate
- Triquetrum
- Pisiform
- Hamate
- Capitate
- Trapezoid
- Trapezium
Where is the scaphoid palpated?
The scaphoid is palpated in the anatomic snuff box.
What is the most commonly fractured carpal bone?
Scaphoid bone
How is the scaphoid typically injured?
The scaphoid is typically fractured from a fall on an outstretched hand.
What is a scaphoid fracture prone to?
A scaphoid fracture is prone to avascular necrosis owing to retrograde blood supply.
What can dislocation of the lunate cause?
Dislocation of the lunate may cause acute carpal tunnel syndrome.
How can ulnar nerve injury result from a fall?
A fall on an outstretched hand that damages the hook of the hamate can cause ulnar nerve injury.
What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is entrapment of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel.
What are signs and symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome?
Nerve compression causes parethesia, pain, and numbness in the distribution of the median nerve.
The Thenar eminence atrophies but sensation is spared because palmar cutaneous branch enters the hand external to the carpal tunnel.
What is carpal tunnel associated with?
- pregnancy
- rheumatoid arthritis
- hypothyroidism
- diabetes
- dialysis-related amyloidosis
- repetitive use
What is Guyon Canal Syndrome?
Guyon Canal Syndrome is compression of the ulnar nerve at the wrist or hand.
