EL 5 - Equilibria (Acid-Base) Flashcards
1
Q
What is an acid?
A
An acid is a species that releases H+ ions in solution
2
Q
What is an alkali?
A
An alkali is a species that releases OH- ions in solution
3
Q
What is a base?
A
A base is a soluble alkali
4
Q
What is a neutralisation?
A
A neutralisation is when the proton on an acid molecule is replaced by a metal ion (or ammonia), forming a salt and water
5
Q
How do group 2 oxides react with water?
A
(M is a group 2 metal)
MO + H2O -> M(OH)2
Group 2 oxides are therefore basic as they release OH- ions when dissolved
6
Q
How do group 2 hydroxides react with hydrochloric acid?
A
(M is a group 2 metal)
M(OH)2 + 2HCl -> MCl2 + 2H2O
Group 2 hydroxides neutralise metals
