CD 4 - Reaction Mechanisms Flashcards
1
Q
What is a condensation reaction?
A
A reaction where two molecules react to form one larger molecule, forming a bond between them. A small molecule, usually water, is released
2
Q
What is a hydrolysis reaction?
A
A reaction that breaks a compound into two, using water. This reforms their previous functional groups using the -H and -OH from the water
3
Q
What is an elimination reaction?
A
A reaction where a group or pair of atoms are removed from a molecule
4
Q
What is an addition reaction?
A
- A reaction whereby one molecule reacts with another to form a larger molecule. There are no other products
- Atom economy is 100%
5
Q
What is a substitution reaction?
A
A chemical reaction whereby one functional group is replaced by another functional group
6
Q
What is oxidation?
A
- Oxidation is loss of electrons
- If something is oxidised, its oxidation state increases
7
Q
What is reduction?
A
- Reduction is gain of electrons
- If something is reduced, its oxidation state decreases
