EL 4 - Organising the elements of life Flashcards
Describe Mendeleev’s periodic table
Mendeleev arranged elements in order of increasing atomic mass.
Elements with similar properties were in the same vertical group.
He left gaps and they corresponded to his predictions of elements that had not been discovered at the time.
(Also made predictions about the properties of undiscovered elements e.g germanium)
What is periodicity?
The occurrence of periodic patterns or trends
Name the four blocks in the periodic table and label them
s (group 1 and two), d (block between group 2 and 3), p (group 3-0) and f (block along the bottom)
What ions do group 1 elements form?
1+ ions
What ions do group 2 elements form?
2+ ions
What ions do group 7 elements form?
1- ions
What ions do group 6 elements form?
2- ions
What ion does aluminium form?
3+ ions
What is the pattern that you can use to write electron configurations using the periodic table?
Period 1,2,3,4,5 etc. for s block: 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s
Period 1,2,3,4,5 etc. for p block: 1p, 2p, 3p, 4p, 5p
Period 4,5,6,7 for d block: 3d, 4d, 5d, 6d, 7d
