EKG Quiz 2 Chapters 5-9 Flashcards
Definition of a slow heart rate and the numbers associated with it
Bradycardia is a heart rate <60
Normal heart rate is between 60-100
Definition of a fast heart rate and the numbers associated with it
Tachycardia is a heart rate >100
Normal heart rate is between 60-100
Know what a 6 second strip method is and why you would use it
The 6 second strip method is a method for calculating the heart rate that is the least accurate (though considered by many experts to be the method of choice for irregular rhythms ); doesn’t give much information and can be misleading
To read a 6 second strip, count the number of QRS complexes on the rhythm strip and multiply it by 10 to get bpm
Define paroxsymal
Paroxysmal refers to a rhythm that starts and stops suddenly
Paroxysmal atrial tachycardia (PAT) is the sudden burst of 3 or more PACs in a row that usurps underlying rhythm and becomes its own rhythm for a period of time
Define sinus block
Sinus block is a pause that occurs when the sinus node fires its impulse on time, but the impulse’s exit from the sinus node to the atrial tissue is blocked
Counting QRS
Count the QRS complex and multiply it by 10 to find average bpm
Define dysrhythmia
Dysrhythmias are abnormal rhythms that have the following characteristics:
- QRS complexes are absent/abnormally shaped
- P waves are absent/multiple in numbers or abnormally shaped
- Abnormally prolonged QRS intervals
- Abnormally prolonged or shortened PR intervals (PR = interval between beats)
- Abnormally slow or fast heart rate
- Irregular rhythm or rhythm that has interruptions by premature betas or pauses
Define sinus rhythm
Sinus rhythm is a normal rhythm, born in the sinus node and heads down the conduction pathway to the ventricle at a rate of 60-100 bpm
Define junctional rhythm
Junctional rhythm is a rhythm that originates in the AV junction at a rate of 40-60 bpm with INVERTED P WAVES BEFORE THE QRS
