Effects Of Pollution Flashcards
What are the different types of exhaust pollutants?
-Carbon monoxide
-Nitrogen oxides
-Carbon dioxide
-Hydrocarbons
-Sulphur dioxide
What is carbon monoxide?
A type of gas in the atmosphere, when inhaled, restricts the flow of oxygen around the body.
What are the effects of carbon monoxide?
It effects the central nervous system, impairing physical co-ordination, vision and judgement.
How are nitrogen oxides formed?
During the burning of petrol in the engine.
What are the effects of nitrogen oxides on people?
Causes breathing problems, runny noses and sore throats.
What is carbon dioxide?
A major greenhouse cause that seriously effects climate change.
Where are hydrocarbons emitted?
Emitted from the exhaust as unburned fuel.
What are the effects of hydrocarbons on people?
Causes coughing, sneezing, lung and eye irritation.
Where is sulphur dioxide emitted?
From a vehicles exhaust after diesel has been burned.
How can sulphur dioxide effect the atmosphere?
Causes acid rain
How can sulphur dioxide effect people?
Effects breathing and can cause lung problems.
What is lead?
A dangerous exhaust pollutant.
How can lead effect people?
Can cause serious damage to kidneys, liver and reproductive organs.
Also shown to contribute to behavioural problems and impair peoples concentration.
