Effects of Pollutants Flashcards
What happens once pollutants are released into the atmosphere?
Once released into the atmosphere they have to go somewhere because they can’t just disappear. This is when they start causing environmental problems.
Where is particulate carbon deposited?
On surfaces such as stone building, making them dirty.
How is carbon dioxide removed by natural processes?
It is needed by plants for photosynthesis
Some dissolved in rain and seawater, where it reacts with other chemicals.
Why is there increased carbon dioxide levels each year?
We produce too much carbon dioxide, so it’s not all used up naturally. It stays in the atmosphere, so Carbon Dioxide levels increase each year.
What is Carbon Dioxide?
A Greenhouse Gas
What do Greenhouse Gases contribute to?
Global Warming, which is leading to climate change.
What happens when Sulfur Dioxide and Nitrogen Dioxide react with water?
Acid Rain is produced
What is the disadvantage of acid rain?
It damages trees, corrodes metal and upsets the pH balance of rivers, causing plants and animals to die.
