Q

What happens during osmosis on plant and animal cells with hypertonic?

A

cytoplasm has a higher water potential than its surroundings

the water moves out of the cells down the water potential gradient by osmosis

plant cells - cytoplasm and cell membrane shrink away from cell wall - plant cell becomes flaccid

animal cells - cytoplasm and cell membrane shrink - animal cell becomes flaccid

Q

What happens during osmosis on plant and animal cells with isotonic?

A

cytoplasm has the same water potential as its surroundings

no net movement of water by osmosis

plant & animal cells do not change shape or size

Q

What happens during osmosis on plant and animal cells with hypotonic?

A

cytoplasm has a lower water potential than its surroundings

water moves into the cells down the water potential gradient by osmosis

plant cells have a strong cellulose cell wall so they dont burst

animal cells have a weak cell surface membrane - burst
