Cell Membranes Flashcards
What are glycoproteins?
made of carbohydrates (glyco) and proteins
allows cell signalling
What is the role of cholesterol in cell membranes?
binds to the hydrophobic tails
makes the membrane more rigid - so less flexible
gives strength and support
What are the two types of transport proteins?
channel protein and carrier protein
What is glycolipid made of?
carbohydrate and lipid
What do the hydrophobic heads do?
face inwards
What do the hydrophilic heads do?
face outwards
What can phospholipids do?
slide over each other - through fluids
What do small non-polar molecules do?
diffuse / move through e.g. O2 or CO2
What is water?
polar - so it doesn’t diffuse through easily and it moves into cells through aquaporins
