Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion?
net movement of molecules from high to low concentration
passive ( No ATP)
What are the three factors that affect diffusion?
concentration gradient
diffusion distance
surface area
What is concentration gradient?
the steeper the concentration gradient, the faster the rate of diffusion
e. g. ventilation of air in lungs
e. g. the more higher the bridge will be, the more faster the marble will run down
What is diffusion distance?
the shorter the diffusion distance, the faster the rate of difussion
e. g. capillaries have thin walls
e. g. if tom farts anf ben and harry are near, but ben is nearest then ben will be able to smell the fart more quickly
What is surface area?
the bigger the surface area, the faster the rate of diffusion
e.g. aveoli
aveoli have large surface area (folded)
aveoli and capillary have thin walls - reduce the diffusion distance
