Who studied the effects of institutionalisation
Rutter and sonuga-brake (2010)
How did rutter and sonuga-barke study the effects of institutionalisation
They studied 165 Romanian children who had spent their early lives in Romanian institutions who had suffered the effects of institutionalisation
How was the group split
111 of this group had been adopted at the age of 2 years, while the rest of the group (54 children) had been adopted at 4 years old
When were the children tested
At ages 4, 6, 11 and 15
What did they assess
Their physical, cognitive and social development
Who did they compare their results to?
A control group of 54 UK adoptees who had all been adopted at 6 months old
What did they find?
at the time of adoption: the Romanian orphans lagged behind the British adoptees on all measures of physical, cognitive and social development
By age 4: some of the children had caught up with the British adoptees - this was more so the children who were adopted earlier
