Effect Size Flashcards
Effect size
Statistics that estimate the strength or magnitude of the relationship between variables or the difference between two distributions of scores
How to minimise many of the consequences of NHST ?
to report and interpret estimates of effect size in addition to the p value.
Indices in effect size
r2 for correlations
R2 for regressions
When to use cohenâs d?
Differences between means - in Sd
Cohenâs (1988) labels:
â˘r=.10 - small
â˘r=.30 - medium
â˘r=.50 â large
Cohens labels context
meaning of a finding depends on contextual considerations (.50 might be large in one literature and small in another).
practical implications of effects âsmallâ size â
they may be labelled âsmallâ but have large clinical implications.
Sometimes small effects are important when ..
- predicting infrequent events
â˘When there is little variance in the predictor or outcome.
â˘When the outcome is important but resistance to change.
correlation co-efficient is a numerical value of the strength and direction of the relationship between the two ariables is also referred to as?
Effect size
How is effect size shown for Pearson
lower-case, italised r for Pearsons
How is effect size shown for spearmanâs
lower-case, italised r with a subscript s for Spearmans
