A Hirschberg pupillary light reflex test for what?
strabismus
tests pupillary light reflex to see whether light reflex is = in both eyes (light shows up at same point on each eye)
what two genetic conditions often have associated eye problems
Down syndrome
marfans
Does a hordeolum have a slow or abrupt onset, when do you refer? painful or painless?
abrupt and painful refer after 48 hours
what is the treatment for gonococcal conjunctivitis
Rocephin and azithromycin (IV pen for neonate)
what age requires an eye culture?
under 30 days
If a pt has allergic conjunctivitis why do you avoid steroids?
because of increase in intraocular pressure AND risk of activating herpes virus
At what age is strabismus a concern?
after 6 months
Esotropia means what kind of eye deviation?
a. outward
b. inward

if a red reflex is missing what are you concerned for?
retinoblastoma, cataract, scarring
what are some common treatments for otitis external?
ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone otic drops
oflaxacin otic drops
(antifungal drops if fuzzy or hairy appearance present)
treatment for serous otitis media (OME)
no abx needed, watch
what antibiotics are at risk for ototoxicity?
aminoglycosides
conductive hearing: with weber test would the affected ear hear vibrations louder or softer? what about with Rhinne?
weber=sound lateralizes (goes to) the AFFECTED ear
rinne test= vibrations heard louder at mastoid than in air (or abnormal rinne results)
think: skittles in 1 ear, vibrations conduct louder through bones & conductive hearing loss is a middle ear prob (impaction, AOM)
Sensorineural hearing loss: weber does the sound transmit more to affected or unaffected? what about rine rinne results?
weber= noise is transmitted to unaffected (sounds goes to good ear) rhinne= normal in affected ear
what do you teach a parent who’s child has nosebleeds? Do you put your head back or down? where to hold pressure and how long?
sit up right, pressure at KIESSALBACHS triange (where bony part of nose becomes soft) for 10 minutes
